Suzanne Bittle[1] is the cheerful wife of Coach Bittle and the mother of Bitty, who she refers to affectionately as "Dicky".

Background[]

She first came to Samwell for Family Weekend of Bitty's freshman year and saw the game against Yale in which her son scored the winning goal[2]. She first came to the Haus when driving Bitty back to campus for his sophomore year. Upon arriving, she saw Shitty naked.[3]

Suzanne shares her son's interest in baking and they share a Pinterest page. Her sister Connie was a Bob Zimmermann fan and had his trading cards[2].

She refers to Shitty as "Mr. Crappy". She also wants to invite Jack to visit the Bittles in Georgia after he graduates.[4][5]

She successfully convinced Shitty to put pants on while she was on a Skype call with Bitty.[6][7][8]

After Jack was signed to the NHL, she sent Bitty at least five news articles about it.[9]

During the summer between Bitty's sophomore and junior years, she hosted Jack as Bitty's guest. She and her husband were unaware that Jack was now Bitty's boyfriend, not just his best friend, as Bitty hasn't told his parents that he's gay, let alone dating someone.[10] According to Bitty, when Suzanne learned that Jack was coming down to Madison for the Fourth of July, she was excited for a month.[11]

Suzanne is involved in some sort of jam dispute with a relative in the Phelps family, which Bitty discusses on his baking vlog.[10] Jack later questions Bitty about this on one of their Skype dates but he feels too tired to go into it and instead asks Jack to tell him more about the Falconers.[12] Bitty explains on his Twitter that back when they were teenagers, Aunt Judy revamped his grand-moo-maw's recipe and entered the County Fair to compete with Suzanne. His mother had won the previous year, but Aunt Judy claimed it was because a judge had a crush on Suzanne. That year, they tied by a hair and Suzanne borrowed the only handwritten copy of the recipe, but claims that Aunt Judy stole/destroyed it. Though Bitty doesn't know who to believe, he states that the jam feud is the culmination of a decade-long sibling rivalry and southern women weaponizing food preparation.[13]

After Jack makes alternate captain on the Falconers, Suzanne buys his jersey, something she had talking about doing for months. Bitty tells Jack that Suzanne and Coach are both proud of his achievement and Suzanne has a huge crush on Marty and Thirdy and went on about the possibility of meeting them, somewhat disgusting Bitty.[14]

Before one of Bitty's games junior year, Suzanne and Coach both text him a good luck.[11]

After he and Jack start telling people they are dating, Bitty begins to worry about Suzanne and Coach's reactions to the news. This is compounded by the fact that Bob and Alicia support the pair completely while Bitty can't be sure how Suzanne and Coach will react despite loving Jack when they met him.[11]

After Bitty replicates his Aunt Judy's jam recipe for the Falconers, it causes "a whole other debacle" with Suzanne who is apparently unhappy with what Bitty did.[15] When Bitty eventually reveals what he did to his mother, its enough for her to have an angry meltdown.[16]

Suzanne and Bitty later prepare pies together over the phone while talking. Suzanne is excited about how well Jack is doing and his last goal in the playoff games. Suzanne asks Bitty about when he plans to return home for the summer and Bitty is forced to admit that he's planning on staying in Providence with Jack. Suzanne tries to dissuade Bitty because of how busy Jack is, leading to Bitty trying to come out to her. However, Bitty chickens out and hangs up rather abruptly. Afterwards, Bitty admits to Jack that he wants to tell Suzanne the truth, but he just doesn't have the words.[17]

At 10:25pm on the day that the Falconers win the Stanley Cup, Suzanne tries to text Bitty, but gets no answer. Spotting Jack and Bitty kissing on TV, Suzanne calls out to her husband that their son is on TV. Throughout the night, Suzanne calls her son, only to have her calls ignored, leading to Coach texting Bitty to call Suzanne as she is worried.[18] The following morning, Shitty picks up the phone and awkwardly tells her that he'll let Bitty know that she called.[19]

The next day after the presser, Bitty finally calls Suzanne who is folding laundry in the middle of his room at the time. Suzanne tells Bitty that his parents had simply assumed that they were out celebrating and offers her congratulations to both Bitty and Jack. Suzanne makes it clear that she and Coach love Bitty and Jack and admits that they had no idea about their relationship. Suzanne promises her son that if the two of them are together, they can figure it out and he can come home if he wants. Bitty tells his mother that he loves Jack and didn't know how she and Coach would react before finally coming out as gay to her. Suzanne makes it clear that she supports her son and still wants him to come home and is shocked when he admits he doesn't plan on coming home. After Bitty clarifies that he intends to stay with Jack for the moment, Suzanne accepts it, but reiterates he is always welcome in Madison. All Suzanne will tell Bitty about Coach's reaction is that Coach loves him and that he said that Jack played a good, strong game before they say their goodbyes.[20]

Suzanne is unable to make it to Family Weekend in Bitty's Senior Year meaning that Coach will be attending alone.[13] Before Coach departs Samwell on Family Weekend Bitty's Senior Year, he tells Bitty that Suzanne wants Jack to come down for Christmas so that she and Coach could get to know Jack properly as Bitty's boyfriend. Coach reminds Bitty of how much Suzanne loves Jack and suggests that she will probably go off the deep end getting everything ready for Jack. Bitty promises to ask Jack who he knows will love to come if he can. Moments after Coach leaves, Jack texts Bitty having gotten a text from Suzanne asking what food he'd like for the holidays. Bitty then realizes that his boyfriend is going to meet his parents.[21]

When Jack arrives in the middle of the night, he and Bitty are surprised to find Coach and Suzanne still awake. Suzanne greets Jack with a back-cracking hug and offers to warm something up for him if Jack would like. When Bitty tells his mother that they are going to put Jack's luggage away in his room, Suzanne asks if he means the guest room and tells the two that when two young people are unmarried and involved in her house, they will sleep in separate rooms, horrifying and angering Bitty at the implications of her words while Coach quickly goes to bed to get away from the awkward situation.[22]

The next morning, Suzanne greets Bitty who asks if she's getting breakfast ready while the rest of the men rustle. To Bitty's anger, Suzanne tells him that the men have already rustled and Coach is taking Jack on errands.[22] She and Bitty spend the next few hours together icing Christmas cookies as they wait for Jack and Coach to return with Bitty commenting that he knows Jack's still alive as Jack has been texting him. Suzanne tells her son that she's glad he brought Jack home as his partner and boyfriend. Suzanne earnestly tells Bitty that he can bring anyone home and he will still have a home and nothing will change that, making sure he understands that. Suzanne tells Bitty that she missed him over the summer and is sorry he didn't think he could come home. As they hug, Suzanne reiterates that Bitty's parents love him and he should never think he can't come home. As they break apart, Suzanne tells Bitty to stick with Jack as he's a keeper and notices that Bitty piped all of the cookies unnaturally fast. Bitty decides to share with his mother that he has been using Aunt Judy's jam recipe instead of Suzanne's and that's what he's been sending to the Falconers. Suzanne immediately has a meltdown at the news, going so far as to call Judy and yell at her while yelling at Bitty at the same time. Bitty insists he didn't tell Suzanne as he knew she'd throw a fit while Jack and Coach, getting home in the middle of the meltdown, quickly walk away rather than get in the middle of it.[16] As a result of Suzanne's meltdown, Christmas tree cookies end up on the celling.[13]

Along with Coach, Suzanne attends the Frozen Four after Samwell makes it to the championship. Coach, Suzanne and Bitty's friends are all left alarmed by Bitty taking a massive check that he was slow to recover from.[23] However, Bitty is able to recover and checks the other player so hard that they are both sent into the Samwell bench. Suzanne accompanies Jack to the locker room to check on Bitty and are both stunned that Bitty lost one of his front teeth. However, Bitty only cares if they scored or not.[24] As the team celebrates their win, Suzanne watches with a smile as Bitty and Coach hug.[25]

Suzanne and Coach attend Bitty's Class Day and graduation where he gives the Senior Closing Speech[26] and to meet Bob and Alicia Zimmermann.[13] After Jack and Bitty get engaged,[27] Suzanne screams about it even though Jack had talked to her about it beforehand.[13]

Trivia[]

  • Suzanne used to make Bitty PB&J sandwiches with the crusts cut off with little notes attached, something that Bitty later adopted for Jack's pregame ritual.[28]

Suzanne has a crush on Marty and Thirdy, something that her son finds to be highly embarrassing. According to Bitty, Suzanne told him that "Dicky, I'm married but I'm not dead!!"[14]
